Exploring the Colorful Birds of Brazil: A 10-Day Journey with Chilean Photographers
Recently, I had the pleasure of guiding Sandra, Cecilia, Max, and Nicolás, four experienced Chilean photographers, on a 10-day expedition to observe and photograph birds in Brazil. Our main focus was to find endemic and colorful birds, with highlights including the vibrant tanagers, the imposing toucans, the tangara, and the charming tangarazinho.
The Itinerary Our journey began at Guarulhos Airport, where we headed directly to Salesópolis, SP. The first sightings left the group excited. We then moved on to Ubatuba, where the rich coastal avifauna provided us with incredible observations. We visited Paraty and Angra dos Reis, known for their natural beauty and bird diversity. Our adventure continued through Juquitiba and concluded in Tapiraí, completing a route filled with stunning landscapes and unique photography opportunities.
The Stars of the Trip: The Toucans The highlight of the expedition was undoubtedly the observation of toucans. We managed to spot all five species that occur along our route, a true delight for the eyes and the cameras of our guests. The vibrant colors and fascinating behaviors of these birds provided unforgettable moments for everyone.
Encounters with Local Wildlife In addition to the birds, the trip also offered encounters with other aspects of Brazil’s rich wildlife. We observed monkeys, including the black-tufted capuchin, as well as pacas and tapirs. These unexpected sightings further enriched the experience, showcasing the diversity of wildlife in the visited areas.
Feeders and Hummingbirds Another charming aspect of the trip was the feeders present at every lodge where we stayed. These feeders attracted many hummingbirds, providing the photographers with an excellent opportunity to capture images of these fascinating birds in a natural and vibrant setting.
Memorable Moments Another highlight was the culinary experience. The meals, different from what our Chilean friends are used to, provided a delightful cultural exchange. In Ubatuba, we stopped at a restaurant near the fish market and enjoyed a local meal featuring fresh shrimp and fish, a moment of relaxation and connection with Brazilian culture.
Final Reflections The expedition was a unique opportunity to explore Brazil’s rich biodiversity and share this passion with Sandra, Cecilia, Max, and Nicolás. Immersing ourselves in the natural beauty of our country and experiencing the joy of capturing these moments through lenses is an experience everyone should have. I thank the group for their excellent company and for sharing this journey. I look forward to the next adventure, continuing to explore and showcase the beauty of Brazilian birds.
