Exploring the Southeastern Atlantic Forest: A 10-Day Tour with Eduardo and Ana from Uruguay

From July 13 to 22, 2024, I had the honor of guiding Eduardo and Ana, a charming Uruguayan couple with an unwavering passion for birds, on a 10-day expedition through the stunning Southeastern Atlantic Forest of Brazil. This trip was marked by unforgettable encounters with the region’s rich avifauna, authentic cultural experiences, and moments of immersion in Brazil’s natural beauty.

The Itinerary

Our journey began in the vibrant city of São Paulo, where I picked up Eduardo and Ana from Eduardo’s brother’s flat. With the couple’s palpable enthusiasm, we set off for our first stop in Salesópolis, known for its lush trails and diverse birdlife. We continued our adventure through Taubaté and Tremembé, exploring the charming landscapes and rich biodiversity of the region.

We then traveled to Tapiraí, a picturesque location that served as a base for further exploration. The natural beauty and tranquility of the area provided a perfect setting for birdwatching. Next, we headed to Itatiaia, where we visited the high-altitude part of the Itatiaia National Park. This area of the forest, virtually untouched, revealed its wonders as we observed endemic birds, including the fascinating black and gold cotinga with its melodious song, a truly magical experience.

On the final day, our trip culminated with a visit to Angra dos Reis and a boat tour to explore Ilha Grande. The tour unveiled the island’s natural wonders, and lunch at a local restaurant offered an authentic taste of Brazilian cuisine. After a day full of discoveries and beauty, I left Eduardo and Ana at their pousada, concluding our journey on a high note.

Focus of the Expedition

During the expedition, our primary focus was on the region’s most colorful birds and toucans, whose vibrant plumages captivated Eduardo and Ana. Capturing the essence of these birds was a true pleasure, and the resulting photos are testaments to the avifauna’s beauty in the Atlantic Forest. In addition to the colorful birds, we were fortunate to spot the endangered Buffy-tufted-ear Marmoset, a true treasure of Brazilian wildlife, as well as tapirs and pacas. Numerous hummingbirds, with their bright colors and rapid movements, and majestic hawks were also spotted along the way, enriching our experience.

Memorable Experiences

Gastronomy also played an important role in our journey. Eduardo and Ana were delighted by the variety of local flavors and showed particular enthusiasm for cashew juice, a refreshing and exotic treat that became one of the culinary highlights of the trip. Interacting with local cuisine provided an enriching cultural experience, complementing our birdwatching and nature exploration.

Final Reflections

The journey with Eduardo and Ana was an enriching and memorable experience. Their passion for birds and enthusiasm for exploring Brazilian biodiversity were truly inspiring. Accompanying this wonderful couple and sharing the beauty of our avifauna and local culture was an immense pleasure. I look forward to future adventures and to continuing to explore and celebrate the richness of Brazilian biodiversity with new and old friends.
